You will get the opportunity to work on interesting and varied flood, coastal and maritime projects for our clients including Local Authorities across Scotland, Scottish Water, the Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join a growing team, where we can develop our flood, coastal and maritime business together across Scotland and further afield. This opportunity be ideal for a candidate who is near or recently Chartered and is seeking to take the next step in their career.

We undertake feasibility studies to select optimum solutions; prepare business cases to unlock funding; design cost-efficient schemes using the latest digital technologies; provide construction supervision and administrative support; and advise on how to best manage and extend the life of our clients’ assets.

About the Role

  • Support our clients to manage the flood risk, water, and coastal environment in a sustainable and innovative way
  • Co-ordinate, quality assure and lead the delivery of flood risk assessments, drainage impact assessments, surface water management plans, high-level strategies, flood protection studies and business cases
  • Work in a high performance, friendly and supportive team environment to produce high quality deliverables
  • Manage, supervise, and mentor junior staff
  • Understand the scope of work and deliver work to the agreed cost and programme requirements
  • Adhere to required standards, best practice and quality systems
  • Conduct site walkovers to inform flood studies in a safe and professional manner
  • Essential Requirements

    The role is suitable for candidates with a background in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Water & Environmental Management, or another related discipline.

    You should possess and be able to demonstrate the following qualifications, skills, and knowledge:

  • Degree qualified in a relevant Science, Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, or related subject
  • Chartered (or near Chartered) with CIWEM, ICE or equivalent
  • Relevant experience working in the environmental sector for consultancy, in contracting or the public sector
  • Demonstrable commercial awareness, including tendering for flood and coastal work (on client or supplier side) and contract management
  • Experience managing projects and ability to monitor and deliver work to the agreed budget, programme, and scope
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (in particular, the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009); and associated SEPA and Scottish Government guidance documents
  • Knowledge of wider policy drivers and working practises in the flood and coastal sector
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, including the CDM Regulations
  • For those with a geography/ science background: demonstrable experience co-ordinating, quality assuring and undertaking analysis and interpretation of flood and coastal datasets, including identifying key issues and challenges and creating products such as flood risk assessment reports, business cases and strategies
  • For those with an engineering background: demonstrable experience co-ordinating, quality assuring and undertaking feasibility assessments, optioneering and outline and detailed design packages of work and producing engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and business case reports. Oversight of site supervision duties for engineering projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complicated technical information to our clients in a clear and transparent way
  • Ability to liaise with internal and external clients to develop relationships across the business
  • Ability to work under time pressure and balance multiple priorities
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of internal professionals, and third-party asset owners, stakeholders, technical officers, and contractors
  • Creative and practical thinking to solve environmental and project management challenges
  • An advanced level of computer literacy
  • Ability to travel to client offices and attend site visits
  • Desirable Requirements

  • Experience working in flood and coastal consultancy
  • Experience managing/ supervising junior staff
  • Knowledge of contract management principles
  • Working knowledge of hydrometry and of hydrological estimation methods for both gauged and ungauged catchments
  • Experience in the use of detailed hydraulic modelling for flood estimation
  • Experience of working on flood protection scheme projects at feasibility, outline design, detailed design and/or construction stages
  • Working knowledge of GIS, with experience in the use of either ArcMap or QGIS
  • Experience working with flood and coastal risk management stakeholders, including local communities
  • Experience in quality assurance (QA) processes, including the checking of others’ outputs
  • Experience in the handling and interpretation of datasets relevant to flood risk management (e.g., LiDAR)
  • An understanding of The Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland) Regulations 2011, and the associated General Binding Rules and levels of authorisation
  • An understanding of the Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003 (the ‘WEWS’ act), and the associated River Basin Management Plans (RBMP’s)
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Project
  • A high-level understanding of morphological processes influencing flood risk management and
  • Experience in the application and assessment of natural flood management measures
